The Lorita Leung Dance Academy was established in 1970 as one of North America's first Chinese dance schools. Since then, it has grown considerably and now offers a variety of classes in Chinese dance, classical ballet, contemporary Chinese dance, At the heart of the Academy is its faculty - a team of caring and highly specialized professionals from Canada and China, several of whom are noted dancers and choreographers. Classes are kept small and are carefully divided by level to ensure that each student is continually challenged to reach their own maximum potential.
The Lorita Leung Dance Academy is currently the only school in British Columbia to offer both ballet and Chinese Dance examination programs. Students in the classical ballet program have the opportunity to participate in the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) examinations, and students in Chinese Dance may take the Beijing Dance Academy Chinese Dance Examination Syllabus (CDES). Advanced students have the opportunity to perform with The Lorita Leung Dance Company and to further their studies at the Beijing Dance Academy in China.
Beginning September 1, 2008, the BC Ministry of Education will award Chinese Dance Syllabus students with a total of 12 credits to meet their fine arts and/or applied skills graduation requirement.
These credits are awarded upon successful completion of the Chinese Dance Syllabus as follows:
4 credits for completing CDES 7 at the high school Grade 10 level,
4 credits for completing CDES 8 at the high school Grade 11 level, and
4 credits for completing CDES 9 at the high school Grade 12 level.
This is indeed good news, and allows Syllabus students to earn even more credits toward their high school graduation. Prospective students with no dance experience should enroll in the Syllabus at an early age to ensure that they can reach the CDES 7 level by the time they are in high school grade 7. Students with dance background (ballet or Chinese dance) can be streamed into the Syllabus program depending on experience.
Each year, students from our Academy participate in a School Recital and numerous local shows as well as in the North American Chinese Dance Competition every two years.
The Lorita Leung Dance Company was established in 1970 and is now considered by China to be one of the finest Chinese dance performing groups in North America. We are known for our authentic and professional stage presentations as we pursue our objective of promoting, preserving and enhancing Chinese Dance.
The Lorita Leung Dance Academy offers classes at all levels for children, teens and adults. Small group and private lessons can be arranged. We also offer special choreography for pageants and competitions.
