The Lorita Leung Dance Association was incorporated as a BC non profit society on January 16, 1984. Shortly afterwards, it was recognized as a Canadian Registered Charity. Its objectives are to preserve, promote and enhance Chinese dance. It does this by sponsoring the Lorita Leung Dance Company, by organizing the North American Chinese Dance Competition (every two years) and by presenting the Beijing Dance Academy Chinese Dance Syllabus in Canada. The Association frequently brings Chinese dance experts from China to Canada on cultural exchange.  

The Association pursues its objectives in four ways:

1. By sponsoring The Lorita Leung Dance Company who are regarded by the Chinese Ministry of Culture as the finest Chinese Dance performing group in North America. This is done by sponsoring performances and by providing authentic costumes brought in from China.


2. By organizing the bi-annual North American Chinese Dance Competition. This Competition furthers awareness of Chinese Dance among the public and helps the participants improve their standard of Chinese Dance through meaningful adjudication. The Competition is unique because it features only Chinese Dance and uses three adjudicators. At least one adjudicator is a Chinese Dance expert brought in from China.


3. By organizing and promoting the Chinese Dance Syllabus. This is a long-term partnership with the Beijing Dance Academy (BDA) and the Chinese Ministry of Culture to establish a teaching standard for Chinese Dance. Each summer, a teacher from the BDA comes to Canada to teach teachers and examine their students on Syllabus material.


4. By fostering cultural exchange between China and Canada. From inception until July 2009, the Association has sponsored over 45 Chinese Dance professionals to come to Canada to teach and learn and adjudicate. These dancers, teachers and choreographers act as an invaluable resource network in our efforts to preserve, promote and enhance Chinese Dance.
