Levels 1-3

The CDES Teacher’s Certification Course will be offered in Levels 1-3 and for dance and movement teachers who are interested in learning the CDES to teach to their students.

Who can take the course?

The course is open to amateur or professional dance teachers and experienced dance performers.  Previous CDES experience is not necessary, but Mandarin language skills and/or previous Chinese dance or ballet training are an asset. Levels 1-3 are ideal for primary-level teachers who are interested in incorporating movement and dance into their class materials, while also introducing Chinese song, dance and culture.  The course will be taught in English and Mandarin. Participants must be a minimum of 16 years old to attend.

What do your students gain?

Levels 1-3 of CDES are primary levels aimed at children ages 4-8 years. They focus on the development of gross and fine motor skills, co-ordination, posture and alignment, and musicality and rhythm, while engaging young children in fun and imaginative dance sequences.  They also help to build a basic foundation for further dance studies, and engage the minds and bodies of young children through the joy and exuberance of Chinese dance.

How are the participants evaluated?

The course covers 34 hours of training, which includes detailed studio instruction and pedagogy.  On the final day, the participants will do a video examination, where they will be recorded performing all the exercises.  The video will then be sent to the Beijing Dance Academy where a separate examiner will evaluate each participant.  If the participant successfully passes the course, s/he will receive their teaching certificate.

Levels 4 & 5

Upon completion of Levels 1-3, teachers may choose to continue with Levels 4 & 5.  Levels 4 & 5 are geared towards children ages 8-11 years of age, and provide a well-rounded syllabus in Chinese dance that covers elements of Classical, Folk and Ethnic dances. Focus is placed on building a strong dance foundation, with exercises that develop posture, technique, musicality, co-ordination, and presentation in young students.

In Level 5, students progress to barre exercises, which further enhance posture and strengthen dance technique.

Can I take Level 4 & 5 without taking Levels 1-3 first?

All CDES teacher’s certification levels must be taken consecutively, and skipping of levels is not permitted.
